We've Come This Far By Faith...

Main Street Church of God in Christ formerly called the Little Red Church, the Sawdust Church, and South Main Church of God in Christ was organized in 1928 under the leadership of the late Elder W. H. Smallwood. In 1932 during the administration of the late Superintendent W. Washington and Overseer Hightower, Elder Smallwood and Elder Jackson exchanged works. Elder Smallwood became pastor of Crossett Arkansas Church of God in Christ and Elder Jackson became pastor of South Main Church of God in Christ.

After the subsequent resignation of Elder Jackson, South Main thrived under the leadership of several spirit-filled pastors, which included Elder Arthur Tiggs, and Pastor T.J. Kinlow. In 1942 under Pastor Kinlow’s administration, the South Main Church erected a white frame building on its property. Elder Kinlow was thereafter reassigned and later became bishop of the state of Washington.

After Elder Kinlow’s reassignment, Elder F.E. Reed became the pastor of South Main Church of God in Christ until January of 1970 at which time he resigned as pastor. For several months South Main was without a pastor until June 6, 1970 when the late Bishop Leato Thomas Walker, Sr. appointed Elder Joe Louis Stocker pastor of the South Main Church of God in Christ. Since there was not a North Main Street in the vicinity, Elder Stocker changed the name from South Main to Main Street Church of God in Christ.

During Pastor Stocker’s administration Main Street grew spiritually and its membership increased exponentially. Between 1989-1990, Main Street experienced a series of structural renovations as Pastor Stocker rallied the entire church around the beautification of the Main Street Church campus. Serving as general contractor, Pastor Stocker oversaw the addition of classrooms, a ladies’ lounge, an expanded choir stand, kitchen area, and pastor’s office. There was also the addition of new carpet, cushioned pews, new pulpit furniture, a new organ, a new van and the acquisition of additional land to be used in future expansions.

In October of 2017, after serving 47 years as pastor of the Main Street Church and over 20 years as Superintendent of the Pine Bluff District #1, Pastor Stocker transitioned from labor to reward. There again for the 1sttime in 47 years Main Street Church was without a pastor. But in February of 2018, Bishop Jewel Robert Withers, Jr. appointed Elder Brandon R. Clay servant leader of the Main Street Church of God in Christ. In June of 2018 Elder Clay was officially installed as Pastor and Main Street has taken off where it left off. We remain thankful and grateful for what the Lord has done and will continue to do through the Main Street Church.
